Artist In Residence Programs


Red Star Studios continues to host national and international artists through its Artist in Residence program. Residencies are offered for visual artists at every stage in their careers. Candidates are chosen by a panel of studio managers and directors based on the artist's portfolio and educational merits. We will begin accepting applications for our Artist in Residence program in January, for residencies beginning in September, 2012. Please submit the required items, by April 15, 2012, in a single package, mailed to Red Star Studios, Attn: Artist in Residence Committee.

The following residency opportunities are currently offered:

Artist in Residence

This residency is open to artists looking to further their artistic and professional careers and gain experience in a working studio environment.

Term: • 1-year, with one 6 to 12 month renewal option.

Requirements:

• Recently completed undergraduate or graduate degree
• Submission of the following items:
- 10 images (CD or DVD only)
- CV and Artist Statement
- Two letters of reference
- Brief statement of intent

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the maintenance and productivity of the studio environment. This may include assisting with firings, cleaning and/or other up-keep;
• Instruction and advising of studio members;
• Participate in studio-sustaining activities through design, production or education.

• Pre-determined supplies
• Firings
• Mentoring
• An exhibition at the end of the Residency
• An opportunity to present specific proposals for consideration which can lead to the development of the following:
- Production/Distribution of designs
- Catalogue Creation
- Written Essays
- Exhibitions
- Experience in the operation of a working ceramics studio


Core Artist in Residence

Open to the established artist in need of a stable studio environment in which to develop artistically and professionally, this program provides the opportunity to participate in the planning and vision of Red Star Studios.

Term: • 2-years, with annual reviews and renewal options.

Requirements:

• Working as a professional artist for at least 5 years
• Submission of the following items:
- 10 images (CD or DVD only)
- CV and Artist statement
- Written proposal with clearly articulated professional goals

Responsibilities:

• Responsibilities may include one or all of the following:
- Periodic teaching
- Mentoring and critiquing fellow residents and studio members
- Contribute to the sustainability of Red Star Studios. This may include through exhibition of work, product development, and studio sales.

Benefits:

• Materials and Firings within defined parameters
• Studio Rental fees may be waived, depending on scope of proposed participation in the Studio environment


Fellowship Artist in Residence

Designed for the mid-career artist looking to develop or explore a specific idea. This could be conceptual, design-based, an entire body of work, or even professional development.

Term: • 3 to 6 months (terms begin in March and September)

Requirements:

• Five years of experience as a professional artist
• Submission of the following items:
- 10 images (CD or DVD only)
- CV and Artist Statement
- Written proposal with clearly articulated goals for the Residency

Responsibilities:

• Donate a piece to the Red Star Studios Collection;
• Community interaction through at least one of the following:
- Artist Talk
- Slideshow
- Workshop
- Mentoring
- Artist critiques

Benefits:

• Private Studio space
• $500 monthly stipend
• Materials and Firings
• An exhibition at the end of the Residency
• Assistance in finding housing for the residency term
