Over the years, Red Star Studios Ceramic Center has offered opportunities to ceramic artists in a Resident Artist program that provides clay artists an opportunity to be a part of a growing, nurturing community while increasing and sharing expertise in the field of ceramics.

In evaluating a potential Resident Artist, we are concerned with personality as well as ceramic ability. It is incredibly important to have human interaction skills since the Resident will be interacting with students, faculty, and studio members. A typical question we might ask would be: "Are you the type of person who will stop and answer a question for someone when you'd really rather just be working on your own work?"
The duties of the Resident are strictly defined in terms of responsibilities, but loosely defined in terms of hours of commitment. It will take approximately 20 hours a week, but depending on the studio load it could be more or less. The Residents are in charge of our 70 cu. ft. Geil kiln and small soda kiln. Duties include scheduling, loading, firing, unloading, maintaining the kilns and shelves, and record keeping. The Residents also assist during workshops in varying degrees and capacities.
In return, Residents enjoy a private studio equipped with shelving, cabinets, tables, and a wheel if needed. Clay (Laguna B-mix or B-mix with sand), glaze materials, firing, and mentoring(if desired) are provided. With a BFA or MFA, there is the possibility (but not a promise) of teaching a beginning class at Red Star Studios. We pay $25 an hour and classes are 3 hours a week (although there are weeks with no classes). There are affordable apartments close by for lease and Residents are strongly encouraged to live in the neighborhood. And what a great neighborhood we have here at Red Star Studios! Along with affordable housing, we enjoy the benefit of great restaurants and entertainment, some within walking distance. Nearby, are the Kansas City Art Institute, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and the Crossroads Arts District, which is teeming with galleries and fine cuisine. Red Star Studios utilizes 8-10 Interns at all times. There is no specified term, however a minimum 3-month commitment is required. Interns work several hours a week in exchange for Shared Studio membership (see Shared Clay Studio). Jobs range from cleaning the restroom to mixing clay and glazes and firing the electric kilns. If you would like to be an Intern, the thing to do is stay in contact and let Tara Dawley know who you are. You will be sent information to apply for Internships when they come available if your current contact information is on file.
