Anyone who fires a complete stack of their own pottery must be responsible for loading, unloading, and cleaning up of their mess. Loading and unloading must be done on a timely basis as scheduled by our Artist-In-Residence. If you buy stacks regularly, you can share 1 stack with another member, but the person who signs up is responsible for payment and loading ? if you buy 2 stacks you cannot sell off 1 just to get the lower rate.
Each firing package includes the cost of both bisque and glaze firing and the use of studio glazes. All charges are based on the use of our cone 10 gas reduction kiln. All pots must have a permanent mark or signature that identifies the potter.
Each pot on the shelf to be glaze fired should have either a class coupon or a firing slip, with name, dimensions, and total cubic inches, enclosed. You must measure each pot and include a slip or it won?t be fired! No exceptions!! All slips must include height, width, and depth measurements.
All firing must be paid for in advance. Payment must be made when scheduling a stack. We will keep a notebook with a sheet for each person who has paid for firing. As we load the kiln, we will transfer the cubic inches for each pot into the notebook.
- To figure cubic inches take H x W x D. You can use fractions of an inch. A pot 6? x 4? x5? would be 120 cu. in. A pot 12? x 8? x 8? would be 768 cu. in.
- Plates or tiles under 3? in height are to be figured at 3? unless stacked on your own plate setters. If fired on plate setters, the whole stack should be measured as a unit. This surcharge covers the extra time, shelf wear and tear, and fuel cost of firing plates.
- There will be a $5 fee for every glaze run that reaches the kiln shelves. In extreme cases of glaze running we will asses the fee on an individual basis!

- Red Star Studios is a large studio and our soda kiln is small. It has limited capacity and it requires much more effort, energy, and time to fire. Anyone who wants to do a significant amount of work in this kiln must plan far in advance and understand that it will cost significantly more than firing in the Geil reduction kiln.
- When firing with coupons, the soda kiln requires either 2 student coupons, or double the cubic inch measurements when using a firing package.
- We recommend limiting the number of bowls or plates fired in the soda kiln, as they are likely to collect debris as it moves through the kiln.
